I think it has a lot to do with Starbucks not having free wifi. Go to other coffee shops and do a comparison I think the results will show free wifi equals more laptops. More corporate than consumer orientated.

maybe you should try at a different time (and not on a sunday arvo).
try Tuesday morning (10am) or Thursday afternoon (5pm), and not during the summer holidays :)
maybe you coud observe these trends over a longer period of time (6 months or so, but 1 year would be the best) and draw fancy graphs and charts. based on the results you could approach Starbucks your valuable findings - so they would offer faster / better etc internet; install more plugs...
